Our Story

Welcome to the Howard Heroes Fund, where the spirit of camaraderie and support for our firefighting community knows no bounds. Our journey began in 2003, a year marked by profound personal tragedies within the Howard County Professional Fire Fighters Association. As our members faced heartbreaking losses – from the unimaginable grief of losing children to the devastation of home fires – a collective desire to lend a helping hand emerged.

Faced with the dilemma of balancing compassion with fiscal responsibility, we embarked on a mission to establish a separate fund dedicated to providing crucial financial assistance in times of dire need. Thus, the Howard Heroes Fund was born. Despite the fact that those directly impacted in 2003 wouldn't directly benefit, the vision was clear: to create a safety net for future emergencies. In early 2004, we took the first steps towards our goal, navigating the complexities of charity filings with unwavering determination. Finally, on August 21, 2007, our efforts bore fruit as the Howard Heroes Fund received official recognition as a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Today, our mission remains steadfast: to offer vital support to career firefighters and their families during moments of crisis. Whether it's assisting with medical expenses following a line-of-duty injury or death, providing relief in the face of unforeseen tragedies, or bridging the gap during insurance delays, we stand ready to make a difference. With your help, we can ensure that no firefighter faces these challenges alone. Join us in our commitment to uphold the legacy of heroism and compassion – because here at the Howard Heroes Fund, only you can make that difference.

Nate's death was obviously unexpected, as was the uncertainty and financial questions that soon followed. Howard Heroes was a big part of those early weeks and months, helping the family with expenses and also running point on outside donations for the family. We remain extremely thankful for their support and, most importantly, for restoring some of the sense of security that we lost with Nate.
